The fun continued on Sunday as I met up with my friend Daniela, blogger for Eater LA, and general gourmet extraordinaire.

Sunday 11 am

Daniela picks me up from Maison 140 in her shiny new Prius and whisks us off to Suzanne Goin’s newest restaurant, Tavern, for brunch in Brentwood. We eat lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberry compote and a smoked fish plate with toasted rye and goat cheese. We gawk as servers pass by with house-made desserts like a softball-sized sticky bun and mile-high carrot cake.

1 pm

Off to the main event! Daniela has to attend a charity event for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, which raises money for childhood cancer research. It’s a chef’s cookout, bringing out the likes of Gabrielle Hamilton (who’s book I just read), April Bloomfield, Jonathan Waxman, Michael Tusk, Paul Kahan, Nancy Silverton, David Lentz, and more. The event is hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and Jimmy Kimmel and raises over $400,000 in one afternoon.

I introduce myself to Coco alums Russell Moore of Camino in Oakland, Bloomfield, and Tusk (below), and help myself to farro salads, roasted lamb, blue cheese toasts with fennel slaw, and desserts by Zoe Nathan of the Huckleberry Cafe.

4 pm

All chef’ed up and ready to go. The plan is for high tea at José Andrés’s Bazaar at the SLS hotel. When we get there we realize we could barely ingest tea, let alone little sandwiches and scones. Not only am I still digesting pork belly sliders from last night’s meal at Animal I’m also now digesting pork belly from this afternoon’s bacchanalia. So we sneak into the restaurant which we’re told is closed until 5:30. Daniela shows me around the Alice-in-Wonderland-esq landscape of neon skulls, oversized chairs, and general doo-dads. On our way out we shut the door by accident and lock ourselves in. It really is like Alice in Wonderland now. We sneak out through a service door, and a long hallway later slip out through an exit near the dumpsters. I don’t think José wanted us to see that.

8 pm

We’re meant to have dinner at Robata Jinya in West Hollywood, a Japanese grill joint that also promises to serve tofu made before your eyes (as Jonathan Gold found so delightful). But we’re tired (and full) and sore and achy from lots of walking around. I know, walking around? This is LA. I should be in a car. So we book it to Thai Town for massages in a strip mall where all the other businesses are Thai restaurants. Thai Sabai didn’t disappoint, $45 for an hour of pulling, kneading, and hot stones.

We ditched our reservation at Robata Jinya and brought home Thai food from the beloved Jitalda instead, located around the block. We order off the Thai menu instead of the American menu and are practically sweating in the car just smelling the stuff. (If you click on the link to Jitalda’s website you’ll see a post from Oct. 20th that says, “Yes we were robbed again last night at gun point, thankfully no one was hurt.” Interesting.

That’s all she wrote folks. The next morning I was whisked via Prius to the lovely LAX and sent on my way back to New York. Until next time Los Angeles.

Everything I know about Los Angeles I learned from watching Curb Your Enthusiasm. So I guess you could say my perception is a tad skewed (or right on?). It’s been one of those U.S. cities still unknown to me, its streets and hills and people a mystery to this New Yorker. I jumped at the opportunity to spend this past weekend there, tagging along with Yuji on a business trip.

Friday, 12 pm

Arrive at LAX and touch down to discover rain splattering the runway and airplane window. I thought this was unheard of in this city but apparently the forecast was calling for rain two out of the three days of my trip. Yuji and I flew separately—he booked his flight through work, me with miles—and miraculously took off from JFK and landed at LAX at the same moments coordinately seamlessly through text messaging.

2 pm

We cruise into downtown LA rather than checking into our hotel so Yuji isn’t late for his first meeting with a client. This means I have 2–3 hours to kill in downtown Los Angeles. My first impression is that this downtown neighborhood reminds me a lot of Vancouver circa 1998, a city near which I lived for two years (I was just outside of Victoria). It’s not just the rain, which lets up, but the desolate downtown of tall buildings and little sidewalk traffic and rundown theaters and homeless people mixed in with occasional signs of gentrification and bright blue sky. And knowing that just beyond these downtown borders lies much wealth and hip coffee shops, mountains and tall trees and the Pacific and joggers.

With an outdated LA Architecture and Design guide I set out from Broadway and 9th Street to spend my first three hours ever in Los Angeles. (Well not entirely true, I was here once sixteen years ago but don’t remember much). Pleased to spot this famous Banksy graffiti from the parking lot.

I wander through the toy district and a street lined with a dozen head shops and go toward Little Tokyo where I discover the name is an understatement. I stop for a green tea and a brief respite to check the map.

From there I venture to Union Station, on the recommendation of a friend who’s enamored with its Spanish-Mission-meets-Art-Deco architecture. This is the site of the city’s founding and original Mission and square. It is a beautiful building from 1939 in which one can board an Amtrak train to exotic places like San Diego or Riverside.

It’s a short walk from Union Station to Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall on S. Grand Avenue between 1st and 2nd. A Gehry is a Gehry is a Gehry but I wanted to see it anyway. I approached it from the north and west, passing by City Hall where I was at first surprised to see a large tent encampment before quickly realizing this must be Occupy LA. My fellow brothers and sisters! I stopped and chatted with the folks at the Information tent.

I head to the Pei, Cobb, Freed & Partners’ First Interstate World Center—the tallest building on the west coast—where there’s a small protest taking place on the plaza out front. I approach one of the young guys holding a sign and ask if Bank of America is inside these buildings. Thinking that I was looking for a Bank of America branch or ATM he replies, looking a little disappointed, “No, sorry, m’am.” He starts asking if I’m aware of the $700 billion bailout and Americans suffering and I scrunch my eyebrows a bit and take off my sunglasses and explain yes! Of course I know! I am the 99%. He looks relieved and introduces himself and I’m on my way.

By the time all this is done I head back to meet Yuji after his meeting and before going on to the next one we’re both starving and stop for a quick bite. We stumble upon a hole-in-the-wall taco joint with a B rating, in other words, just what we’re looking for. We order two pork tacos con todo for $1.25 each and with a full mouth I turn to Yuji and say “this is the best taco I’ve ever had.” And whether it’s the hunger or the run-down atmosphere with old men chowing down on tortas at the smll counter, I mean it.

Friday 5 pm

We drive from downtown to West Hollywood for another one of Yuji’s meetings and I go with to stroll along the shops on Robertson and take in the Los Angeles sun setting. Stumble upon yet another Banksy.

Friday 7 pm

Check in at the Maison 140 in Beverly Hills and take the concierge’s recommendation for dinner at a local restaurant where we spot Piers Morgan and Star Jones. I feel like I really am in Beverly Hills.

Saturday 9 am

Because of the jet lag we both wake up by 6 or 7 and head into Bev Hills for breakfast at the lovely Il Fornaio. No star sightings which is fine by me (who wants to see stars in the daylight anyway). The waiters are old world, the eggs are fluffy, and the the light streaming through the windows is soft and bright. No rain!

12 noon

Head to Santa Monica with my uncle Jim who’s driven up from Fullerton for the afternoon. We stroll the pier and the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) and I nearly get sun burned. We have lunch at a nondescript French joint on the promenade across from the Apple store where I’m denied the new iPhone because surprise they’re all sold out.

3 pm

Now starts the really fun part: cruising around town looking for Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra houses in Hollywood and Silver Lake. We stop at the Hollyhock House and admire the view from atop the hill. We head north and east to Silver Lake Boulevard where there are nine (nine!) Neutra houses on one block. Yuji and I fall in love with the neighborhood where there are actually people outside walking dogs and strolling and biking and the houses are small and beautiful.

Perhaps my favorite part of the day was our drive along Mulholland Dr. from west to east back to the hotel at sunset.

8 pm

The moment I was waiting for all week: dinner at Animal. I first read about Animal in this New Yorker article last year. Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo opened Animal in 2008 on North Fairfax Ave. in this Jewish neighborhood of West Hollywood. We arrive for our reservation a little early and wait at the bar inspecting the menu to figure out what our meal will be. Veal brains? Pig ear? Something called foie gras loco
moco? We eventually settle on chicken liver toast; baby kale with pecorino and lemon chili vinaigrette; pig ear with chili, lime, and a fried egg; bbq pork belly sliders; and the pièce de résistance, a big plate of poutine with oxtail gravy and cheddar. The waiter was impressed at how much we polished off. It’s not the lightest fare, but it was delicious, particularly the pork belly and poutine. Animal reminded me of a west coast version of Marlow and Daughters with its local, sustainable meaty goodness and laid back vibe.

Stuffed to the gills I still insisted on a nightcap of pie and coffee at the famous Canter’s Jewish Deli and Restaurant which happens to be right next door to Animal. What luck! I wanted to visit Canter’s ever since it appeared in an episode of Curb with Marty Funkhauser and Larry David. I only managed two bites of pumpkin pie due to all the pork belly and other animal parts in process of digesting.

Yesterday was all about the snow storm. It seemed to come from out of nowhere: beginning at 11 am Brooklyn began its transformation from mid-fall stupor to winter wonderland. The snow came down fast and hard and blanketed New York City with three inches by the evening.

Last night, despite the inclement weather, eight of us made it to poker in Fort Greene. I decided I’d bring a dessert—it was a perfect day after all for staying inside with the oven on—and landed on a chocolate tart recipe by the trusty David Lebovitz. But first I needed to pick up the few ingredients I didn’t already have on hand (the chocolate, for one), and a tart mold.

I’ve been needing a tart pan for ages so ran into Whisk on Bedford Ave. Whisk is a great kitchen supply store that opened in Williamsburg maybe two years ago and carries top of the line everything. Yuji double-parked out front and I ran in prepared to wince at the price tag and fork over my Visa. But it would be worth it, I thought, for a delicious chocolate tart! Well wasn’t I pleasantly surprised when the mold turned out to be a reasonable $8.99. And the icing on the cake? Christina Tosi, the Wonka-esque pastry chef, was in the back room signing copies of her new book, Momofuku Milk Bar, released this fall by Clarkson Potter.

Given the freezing rain and general freakishness of the weather I was not surprised to find her hanging out with just a couple of Whisk employees, sitting around shootin the you-know-what, without many groupies in sight. I went up and introduced myself and then helped myself to two of her famous cake truffles, birthday cake and dulce de leche. Only three letters to describe those things: O-M-G. I flipped through the book, thanked her for her pastry wizadry and dashed back out into the freezing rain, into the warmth of the Volvo. It was an auspicious beginning to the tart-making.

Back at the ranch, I began by making the pastry, for which I also used the recipe from David’s blog. It really was quite an easy job, requiring neither a stand mixer or electric appliance of any kind. He has a funny post here describing how he came to this particular recipe. You put butter, vegetable oil, water, sugar, and salt into an oven-proof bowl and place that in a hot oven for about fifteen minutes. You take it out, add the flour, and voila, there is your pastry, ready to roll out into the tart shell.

Using the heel of your hand you press the dough into the tart mold. You bake this in the oven to a golden brown before inserting your filling.

The filling is all about bitter chocolate. But first actually you make caramel on the stovetop, melting the sugar until it is a liquid, sweet gold, and then fold in your chocolate. Buy good quality bittersweet and unsweetened chocolate. The recipe also calls for adding 6 tbsp of coffee and just a tsp of vanilla extract. You pour the mixture into your cooled tart dough and then pop it back into the oven.

The resulting tart tasted hardly sweet; with the deep dark notes of the caramel, coffee, and chocolate, it was a nice ending to our pre-poker dinner of braised short ribs, polenta, and broccoli rabe. I was lucky the tart turned out well, but not quite as lucky at poker. In the end I only lost $6 though.

French Pastry Dough
Adapted from Paule Caillat of Promenades Gourmandes and David Lebovitz

3 oz (90 g) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1 tbsp vegetable oil
3 tbsp water
1 tbsp sugar
1/8 tsp salt
1 rounded cup (150 g) flour

Preheat the oven to 410º F (210º C).

1. In a medium-sized ovenproof bowl, combine the butter, oil, water, sugar, and salt.

2. Place the bowl in the oven for approximately 15 minutes, until the mixture begins to bubble and just starts to brown.

3. Remove from the oven, being very careful not to burn yourself on the hot bowl. Stir the flour in quickly, until it comes together and forms a ball.

4. Transfer the dough to a 9-in. (23 cm) tart mold with a removable bottom and, with the heel of your hand, press it evenly into the bottom and sides. If the dough is still hot you can wait until it cools to handle. Reserve a small bit of dough for later in case you need it for patching up any cracks.

5. Prick the dough all over with the tines of a fork (about ten times) to prevent the dough from puffing up, and bake the tart shell in the oven for 12-15 minutes. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn. You want the dough to be golden brown.

6. Remove from the oven and patch any cracks with the reserved dough if necessary. Let the shell cool before filling.

Chocolate Tart
Serves 8-10

1 1/4 c (250 g) sugar
6 tbsp (90 ml) warm coffee
4 oz (115 g) unsalted butter, cubed, at room temperature
pinch of salt
4 oz (115 g) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped
2 oz (55 g) unsweetened chocolate, chopped
2 large eggs
1/4 c (35 g) flour
1 tsp vanilla extract (or 1 tbsp dark rum)

1. Lower the oven temperature to 350ºF (180ºC).

2. Spread the sugar in an even layer in the bottom of a large, heavy-duty saucepan or Dutch oven. Cook the sugar over moderate heat, stirring occasionally with a heatproof utensil, until it begins to liquify. Take care, as caramel can splatter and burn.

3. Once the sugar is melted it will caramelize quickly. When it begins to smoke turn off the heat and stir in the coffee. (You may want to avert your face and be sure to wear oven mitts!) Then add the butter and salt, stir until melted, then stir in both chocolates until smooth.

4. Once the mixture has cooled just a bit, mix in the eggs, then add the flour. Stir in the vanilla extract or rum.

5. Pour the mixture into your pre-baked tart shell then bake for about 15 minutes, just until the filling starts to rise and crack at the edges but the center is still jiggly. Do not overbake.

Remove from the oven and let cool completely before slicing.
